Major cyberattacks in 2025 underscore the escalating challenges in global cybersecurity.
In the year 2025, cybersecurity saw a high level of breaches, with a case in point being a cyberattack at Smiths Group, a multinational involved in engineering and technology, whose systems were compromised and its share price subsequently reduced by 1.7%. Likewise, a cyberattack at Change Healthcare, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, compromised sensitive information regarding about 190 million persons, thus raising concerns about vulnerabilities in the healthcare sector. In addition, AI-facilitated cyberattacks have added a level of complexity in countering such an attack, with hackers leveraging sophisticated technology to boost attack capabilities. In addition, a Salt Typhoon attack, suspected to have been conducted by Chinese hackers, compromised communications networks in America, thus re-emphasizing state-sponsored cyber espionage in cyberspace. Overall, these cases illustrate the imperative for effective cybersecurity and international cooperation in countering emerging cyberspace threats.
